How to Use Sleep Forecast: Predict Your Baby's Next Nap
Sleep Forecast predicts wake windows, nap timing, and your baby's daily rhythm in real time. Here's how it works and how to get the most out of it.
Available now on iOS • Android support coming soon
If you've ever stared at your baby wondering whether they're getting tired or just fussy, Sleep Forecast is built for that exact moment. It's a feature inside the Sprout Baby app that predicts your baby's wake windows, nap times, and overall sleep rhythm for the day, so you're not left guessing.
Think of it less like a fixed schedule and more like a weather forecast for naps: a strong, personalized estimate of what's coming next, that updates as the day actually unfolds.
What Is Sleep Forecast?
Sleep Forecast predicts your baby's next nap and wake window using your baby's own tracked sleep history, alongside patterns from millions of other Sprout babies at a similar age. Instead of you doing the math on when the last nap ended and how long your baby usually stays awake, Sleep Forecast does it for you, right on your baby's Home tab.
The forecast isn't meant to replace your judgment; it's meant to save you the mental math so you can plan your morning, your outing, or your next thirty minutes with a lot more confidence.
How Sleep Forecast Learns Your Baby's Patterns
Sleep Forecast starts working from the very first nap you log. Early on, its predictions lean on anonymized data from other babies at a similar age and stage, so the forecast is useful from day one, even before Sleep Forecast knows much about your baby specifically.
The more sleep you track, the more predictions shift toward your own baby's unique rhythm, including their typical wake window length, nap timing, and the general flow of their day. Millions of Sprout families track sleep, and that shared, anonymized history is what makes Sleep Forecast accurate early on and increasingly personal over time.
Finding Sleep Forecast in the App
Sleep Forecast lives right on your baby's Home tab in Sprout Baby. Look for the Today's Sleep Forecast card above your baby's recent activity, and tap it to see the full breakdown of predicted wake windows and naps for the rest of the day.
For an even quicker glance, add the Sleep Forecast widget to your iPhone's Home Screen or Lock Screen. It shows your baby's next predicted nap without opening the app: long-press your Home Screen, tap the + button, and search for Sprout Baby.
A Forecast That Updates Throughout the Day
Days rarely go as planned, and neither does sleep. Today's Sleep Forecast gives you a starting point each morning, then updates in real time as the day unfolds. An early wake, a long nap, or a skipped nap all reshape what comes next, so you're always working from the most accurate prediction, not yesterday's guess.
Tap into Today's Sleep Forecast from your baby's Home tab to see the whole day laid out across three columns:
- Actual: what already happened today, morning rise, wake windows, and naps as you tracked them.
- Predicted: what's coming next for your baby specifically, updated in real time as the day unfolds.
- Sprout: the typical pattern for babies at the same age, so you can see how your baby's day compares.
Side by side, the three columns make it easy to see when your baby is running ahead of, behind, or right on pace with their usual rhythm.
Reading Your Baby's Nap Prediction
When a nap is approaching, the forecast card shows how many minutes until the predicted nap, an estimated clock time, and a three-stage bar:
- Alert: your baby is awake and active, comfortably before their next wake window ends.
- Wind Down: the window to start your naptime or bedtime routine, dim the lights, read a book, or begin your usual soothing steps.
- Sleep: the stretch when your baby is most likely ready to fall asleep easily.
Use Wind Down as your cue. Starting your routine as soon as the bar shifts into that stage gives you a head start before the predicted nap time arrives.
Watching Wake Windows and Sleepy Cues
Sleep Forecast gives you wake window guidance from the very start, no matter your baby's age. Right after your baby wakes up, the card shows how long they've been awake next to their typical wake window range for their age, so you always have a reliable baseline to work from.
As that window continues, the card shifts from Alert to Watch for Sleepy Cues, a reminder to start looking for early signs of tiredness, like eye rubbing, staring off, or general fussiness, rather than waiting for a full meltdown.
Once Sleep Forecast has enough tracked sleep to work with, and your baby is old enough for a nap pattern to reasonably exist, usually starting around two months, it layers in the more specific nap-time countdown shown above. Until both of those line up, the wake-window range is what you'll see, and it keeps adjusting automatically as your baby grows.

Tips for More Accurate Predictions
- Log sleep consistently. Naps and night sleep both, so Sleep Forecast always has your baby's most recent wake time to work from.
- Start tracking as early as you can. Predictions are useful from day one, but they get sharper the more sleep history Sleep Forecast has.
- Keep notifications or the widget turned on so you catch the Wind Down window instead of checking back too late.
- Expect predictions to shift as your baby grows. Wake windows lengthen over the first year, and Sleep Forecast adjusts automatically as your baby's patterns change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sleep Forecast available on Android?
Not yet. Sleep Forecast is currently available on iOS only, and Android support is coming soon. In the meantime, Android users can download Sprout Baby to track feeding, sleep, diapers, and more.
How accurate are the predictions?
Sleep Forecast's accuracy improves the more sleep you track. Early predictions draw on anonymized patterns from millions of Sprout babies at a similar age, and predictions shift to reflect your own baby's rhythm as you log more of their sleep.
Do I need to track every nap for Sleep Forecast to work?
No, but tracking consistently helps. Sleep Forecast uses your baby's most recent wake time and sleep history to estimate what's next, so gaps in tracking can make individual predictions less precise.
